Abstract
This study examines the effect of tax and financial control measures on economic welfare enhancing variables in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA). Regression analysis is used to investigate this relationship in 48 Sub Saharan African countries. The results indicate that taxes negatively affect education and consumption expenditure. However, budgetary and financial management measures positively affect only remittances. In essence, taxes in SSA are welfare reducing and policy makers should reconsider measures to make taxes welfare enhancing in the sub region.
