Abstract
The focus of this study was to find out the impact of teacher absenteeism on pupils and the mediating role of parents in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality specifically the Asenemaso Circuit. The study used both qualitative and quantitative approaches to gather, analyze and present the data obtained from the field. Data collection methods employed in this study include questionnaires, interviews and documentary review. A sample of 69 respondents was drawn. 50 pupils, 5 teachers, 4 head teachers, 1 Municipal Education Office and 10 parents. Findings of the study show that there are different causes of teacher absenteeism: such as health problems economic constrain, pregnancy and maternity leaves and teachers’ laziness. A various consequence of teacher absenteeism on pupils learning were revealed through the study, poor academic performance, a decline in pupils behaviour, truancy and teachers inability to complete syllabus. Parents on the other hand got involved by removing their wards from the school, Reporting to the education Office, unit Committee and the PTA of the school. However, it was found that some measures were being put in place by relevant authorities to reduce absenteeism or completely end it in basic school. These included, warning letters, facing the Municipal Disciplinary committee, Validation the teachers’ salaries with issues. The study ends by recommending for the Government and Society to encourage regular checkups for teachers, introduce substitute teachers and authorities should act swiftly while parents should be educated on being stakeholders of education for individual and national development.
