Abstract
Every nation must have high-quality education to be prosperous. To be able to adapt into
the rapidly changing society in which we live, citizens must get education of the highest
caliber. The study was set to compare the performance of public and private school
candidates in BECE in Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal in Ashanti region. The research
employed a descriptive survey design. A sample size of 200 students were selected from
two senior high schools within the study area for the study using simple random sampling
method. This work employed the use of questionnaires and performances of students in
BECE and at the SHS level as the main data collection method to obtain data for the study.
The information obtained from both sources were analyzed using descriptive and
inferential statistics. The findings of the study indicated that the performance of private
school candidates was better than the performance of public school candidates in BECE,
the performance of students from Public Junior High Schools was better than the
performance of students from Private Junior High Schools.at the senior high school level
and he factors influencing the performance of students from public and private school at
the senior high school level were teacher factors, student characteristics and home based
factors. It was recommended that, there should be conscious efforts by all stakeholders in
the educational sector to improve the conditions of the public basic schools towards
academic performance and there should be provision of adequate resources in all public
basic schools to enhance effective teaching and learning towards improving academic
performance.
