| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of teaching resources on academic performance of early childhood learners in Atwima Nwabiagya North District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The study specifically sought to; identify the teaching resources used in the early childhood development centres, determine the effectiveness of teachers towards the use of teaching resources in early childhood development centres, and the influence of teaching resources on academic performance of early childhood learners in Atwima Nwabiagya North District. The study was a descriptive survey with a population made up of teachers and head teachers in pre-schools in Atwima Nwabiagya North District. Seventy (70) head teachers were selected purposively while one hundred and thirty-five (135) teachers were conveniently selected for the study. Questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Data collected were analysed, using SPSS version 22 and presented with descriptive statistics. The study found that chalkboards, reference books, teacher’s guides, visual materials and tactile materials were the most common instructional materials used in the pre-schools in the study area. It also came out of the study that, computer, radio and television, simulation devices and other outdoor resources were lacking. The study further revealed that utilisation of the teaching resources among teachers in the pre-schools was high. Finally, the study revealed that there is statistically significant, moderate and positive correlation between teaching resources and learners’ academic performance. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended, among others, that more funds should be allocated to equip pre-schools with resource persons, field trips, internet facilities and recreational facilities, to avert charging parents’ levies for these resources to enhance effective teaching and learning; also motivational programmes should be put in place for school managers, teachers and learners so as to encourage them, and maintain their focus on their roles and contribution, towards effective and efficient education programmes. | |
