Factors contributing to the negative attitudes of female students towards the study of mathematics in kumasi anglican senior high school

Abstract

Mathematics is one of the most important school subjects in the curriculum worldwide. It is a subject that has direct relationship with other subjects, particularly technical and sciences. The study investigated the factors contributing to the negative attitudes of Kumasi Anglican Senior High School female students in the Kumasi Metropolis. To fulfill the study's aims, a quantitative approach was employed. A structured questionnaire was employed to collect data from the respondents, and the questions on the questionnaire were ranked on a five-point Likert scale. A total of 100 respondents were surveyed for the research. The researcher employed descriptive analysis by using SPSS version 21.0. The researcher used Cochran’s formula to determine the sample size of 100 respondents for the study, whereas stratified sampling techniques was employed to select the sample for the study. The study revealed that improved teaching abilities and presenting skills can help students focus in class and grasp what they are learning. Parental participation in their children’s performances ensures that his/her child’s performance is monitored and evaluated. Students will have a clear objective of what they want to be in the future through mentorship programme, role models, and vocational coaching in a variety of professions connected to sciences. The study also revealed motivational level of female students regarding the study of Mathematics. It was recommended that the headmaster and the management of the school should ensure availability and access to adequate teaching materials and resources to facilitate hands-on learning experiences in mathematics
