Abstract
The hotel business is currently in the spotlight as a result of the phenomenal growth in Ghana's tourism industry and rising economic prosperity. The country's hotel lodging system and structure are key to the economic growth of Ghana and the tourism sector. A hotel's efficient operation depends on a variety of variables, including its location, surrounding environment, financial situation, operational procedures, and services, among others. The standard of services provided by hotels attests to their successful and efficient functioning. consequently, effective housekeeping management and procedures are essential to the hotel's smooth running. An operational division of the hotel is housekeeping management. Interestingly, housekeeping management and procedures were saddled with poor working conditions, reduced pay for employees, and a high staff turnover rate, among others. With a purpose sampling of two hundred (200) workers from 25 hotels in the eastern region, the housekeeping management and practices of these hotels were investigated. A purely quantitative design was adopted using a well-structured questionnaire to measure indicators. Data collected was entered into a codebook created from the SPSS for analysis. The result showed that a unit improvement in type of cleaning increases the housekeeping management practices approximately by 64%. Also, the linen management practices strongly enhance the performance of the hotel’s housekeeping management practices by approximately 72%. The results further showed that a unit increase in laundering strategies and process increases Housekeeping Management Practices by about 48% leading to the conclusion that laundering strategies and procedure is significantly related with the housekeeping management performance. Consequently, the study recommends that management attention to the type of cleaning, linen type and laundering strategies are significant components in an effective and efficient housekeeping management. In the future, studies should look into the working conditions of hotel housekeepers to establish their role in the value chain of housekeeping management.
