teaching in primary schools in the Kwabre East District. The total population for the
study was six hundred and sixty (560) respondents. The researcher used lottery method of
simple random sampling method to select a sample size of 400 graduate teachers for the
study. Closed-opened questionnaire was the main instrument used to gather information
from the respondents. The data collected from questionnaires were categorized and
entered in the computer and tabulated according to the research questions. SPSS software
version 23 was used to analyze the data using tables, frequencies and percentages were
used to describe the data in chapter four. The findings of the study hold it that the
graduate teachers were interested in teaching at the primary school. The use of capital
punishment and excessive canning of students affected class participation among primary
school children. Teaching and learning in the primary school was very active and
interesting. Primary school children were sensitive to how teacher’s negative comments
caused their non-participation in class. The study recommended that the graduate teachers
must minimize the rate at which they cane primary school children to improve the
children’s interest in school.
