Abstract
Employee turnover can be harmful to a company’s efficiency if skilled workers often leave the organization and the work population contains a high percentage of novice workers (Armstrong, 2009). The study aim at identifying ways of reducing employee turnover at the Electoral Commission of Ghana. The study sampled 322 employees of the electoral commission. The study adopted the convenient sampling technique. The study used research questionnaire to collect and analyse data. The study found out that high rate of employee’s turnover impacted negatively on organization productivity since most of the experienced and highly productive staffs were lost and it took a long time before the newly recruited staff could learn the required competencies for executing the organization job task functions effectively. The study found out that the major causes of employees’ turnover included; lack of retention strategies, low level of employee motivation, lack of career development opportunities and poor work environment. The study found out that the organization lacked effective retention strategies for minimizing employees’ turnover rates since the reward incentives and bonuses given to employees were not adequate and did not compensate employee work performance. The study recommends that human resource management should improve employee working environment by providing a safe and healthy working environment with modern and latest office facilities and equipment. Better office layout such as open office layout equipped with full equipped first aid kits and emergency facilities should be provided. The management should offer flexible working schedules to foster employees work life balance, acknowledgement and positive feedback should be provided to hardworking employees.
