Item The Predicaments of Non-Residential Students in Ghanaian Institutions of Higher Education: A Micro-Level Empirical Evidence(IISTE. No 1 Central, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong SAR, 2015) Addai, IsaacThis paper in the field of capacity building and students’ affairs used the external survey assessment techniques of the probit model to examine the predicaments of non-resident students of the College of Technology Education, University of Education, Winneba. Considering the very limited residential facilities and the growing demand for tertiary education, being a tertiary residential student is gradually becoming a mirage in most Ghanaian public universities. This paper argued that the College of Technology Education, either through direct provision or indirectly through private providers, should take all steps to ensure that future non-residential student housing projects are conceived as an integral part of the academic community by taking direct and pragmatic steps to mitigate against the difficulties and problems non-resident students encounter at their various places of residence.Item Glycemic Index of Five Ghanaian Corn and Cassava Staples(2019-09-10) Yeboah, Eunice Serwaa; Agbenorhevi, K. Jacob; Sampson, Gilbert OwiahGlycemic index (GI) quantifies and measures the blood glucose raising effect of a food containing a specific amount of carbohydrate. Due to this concerns have been raised on the quality of carbohydrate and the indices that influence its metabolism. The objective of study was to investigate the effect of processing on the glycemic index of five Ghanaian corn and cassava staples. The research design was a cross over trial. Ten healthy subjects consisting of five males and five females were included in the study. Study subjects were served 50g of pure glucose containing 50g of available carbohydrate and 200ml of pure water. Glucose which served as the reference food was given to subjects on two different occasions. The subjects were also served specific 50g of abolo, akple, kafa, local kokonte and processed kokonte on specific days. The glycemic index figures were assessed by using official methods and reported as mean for the ten study subjects. Locally made kokonte had the least GI of 7 followed by processed kokonte which had a GI of 18 whiles kafa had a low GI of 29. Abolo had a medium GI value of 58 and akple also had a medium glycemic index value of 69. There was no significant difference between the GI of locally made kokonte and processed kokonte (p > 0.05) indicating processing had no significant effect on the GI of kokonte.Item Teachers’ Attitude on Students’ Performance in Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at Presbyterian Senior High School – Bechem(Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, 2022) Twum, SamuelThe purpose of the study is to ascertain teachers' attitudes and its impact on students' performance in the classroom at Presbyterian Senior High School-Bechem with regard to mathematics in the Tano South Municipality in the Ahafo Region, Ghana. The results showed that households in the Ashanti region increased their spending on education across all three categories of education covered by the data, with spending on basic education accounting for 57.1 percent of total household spending on education. Female heads of household and family size have a positive impact on households’ annual expenditure on education. This study could help stakeholders involved in the development of the education sector in the Ashanti region to devise better strategies, especially in the face of shrinking public budgets for education, by recognizing the contributions of households as key actors in investing in education in the Ashanti Region. At the policy level, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council must act to ensure that households do not spend more than half of their total household spending on education for basic education.Item THE USE OF LOCAL MATERIALS TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN RURAL AREAS IN GHANA: (A CASE STUDY IN CHARIA, WA MUNICIPAL)(2022-10) SALIFU ABDULAIThe global scarcity of building materials, particularly in emerging nations, necessitates significant substitutes in the construction sector. Like any other developing nation, Ghana needs creative solutions for projects involving cheap housing to balance out the country's current built environment. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of local building materials to produce affordable housing in Charia within the Wa Municipality. The study specifically sought to; determine the extent to which the Charia locality uses locally produced building materials, assess the perception of respondents on the use of locally produced building materials, assess/determine the effect of the use of local building materials on the rural economic of Charia, determine the relationship between educational level and the use of locally produced building materials in Charia community and to assess the relationship between income level and the choice of local building materials. The study employed a qualitative case study research design. The target population consists of locals who build houses using local materials, experts who are familiar with local building supplies, and non governmental organisations that work on rural housing. Sixty (60) people were chosen as the sample size using a convenience sampling technique, and 60 of them responded. Focus groups, on-site inspections, and interviews, with local building materials for cheap housing were used as the methods in this research. The primary instrument for gathering data were questionnaire, and both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. The study revealed that a vast majority of participants stated they purchase their building supplies locally for construction-related projects. The study further revealed that, the absence of infrastructure is strongly perceived as an extra cost that must be paid for each month by the household. Also, majority of respondents express dissatisfaction with the quality of materials obtained from various quarries or production sites. It has been shown that the kind and composition of materials used greatly influence the quality of structures. It was discovered that using native materials preserves cultural history, keeps money in the community's economy, maintains a cool environment, and is generally inexpensive. Notwithstanding these difficulties, the use of native materials promotes local communities' cultures and keeps money flowing into the local economy. The study's conclusions demonstrated that the high cost of imported building materials makes dwellings expensive. A complete strategy is needed to encourage communities to build with locally sourced materials, and it makes sense for local material producers to incorporate new technology into their production processes. It is advised that research organisations like the Forest Research Institute of Ghana and BRRI Ghana raise awareness by building structures in Ghanaian locations where local building materials are readily available, as this is the best way to replace traditional building material.Item Factors contributing to the negative attitudes of female students towards the study of mathematics in kumasi anglican senior high school(2023) ANTHONY ADJEIMathematics is one of the most important school subjects in the curriculum worldwide. Moreover, to enhance the practical skills of TVET students, it is recommended that stakeholders in TVET institutions gear the teaching and learning of Mathematics towards students’ practical lessons. Also, emphasis on practice should take precedence over theory in the mathematics curriculum.Item Using the UTAUT Model to Assess the Factors Influencing the use of ICT in Ghanaian Pre-Tertiary Mathematics Education(Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, 2023) Owusu Bandoh, SampsonAs the demand for the adoption and use of Information communication and technology has increased rapidly due to the exponential growth of technological advancement in all human endeavor, researchers are also developing theories and/or modells that could be used to explain and predict humans’ acceptance and use of these technologies as they are been released in the markets. The present study adapted one of the powerful modells for ICT integration (thus, Unified Theory of Acceptance and Technology Use) to assess pre-tertiary mathematics facilitators' intentions and actual use of ICT for mathematics instructions in Ghana. The study adopted a quantitative research design with a questionnaire a survey instrument for collecting 185 valid data from both junior and senior high schools’ mathematics facilitators. Descriptive statistics and an enter multiple regression were deployed to validate the proposed research questions. Using SPPS v.23 as a statistical software for analysing the data, the result reveals that, performance expectancy and effort expectancy had a positive and significant effect on mathematics facilitators' intentions toward ICT adoption. Moreover, social influence was significant but had a negative impact on facilitators' intentions. The impact of mathematics facilitators' intention to use ICT and the facilitating conditions within the school environment was also a positive and significant predictor of facilitators' ICT use behaviour. It was concluded from the findings that facilitating condition was the better predictor for mathematics teachers’ ICT use behaviour than teachers’ intention. Hence, the researcher recommended that more government expenditure must be allocated to infrastructures that would improve the use of ICT as well and frequent ICT training must be undertaken to enrich teachers’ knowledge in the affordance of using ICT in mathematics classrooms.Item Relative Viability of the Method of Conjugate Linear Equations in Solving Quadratic Equations: A Comparison with the Conventional Factorization Method(Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, 2023) Alhassan, SamuelThis study sought to find out the viability of the method of conjugate linear equations in solving quadratic equations among senior high school (SHS) one students, by comparing the effectiveness of teaching quadratic equations using the conjugate linear equations method and the traditional factorization method. The research employed a mixed-methods design, incorporating surveys and semi-structured interviews with fifty-five respondents which comprises a mix of both students and instructors, selected through a combination of purposive and systematic sampling methodologies. The study found that, students possess a higher level of familiarity with pattern making approaches compared to their overall expertise on the subject matter, and that a significant proportion of the students exhibit competency in pattern drafting. However, their level of competence in this area is relatively insufficient, suggesting the necessity for further efforts to enhance the students' skills and competences in pattern drafting. In addition, the study found that a considerable proportion of the students exhibited a deficiency in the technical aptitude necessary for precise pattern drafting. Based on the findings, the study recommends the establishment of a stronger collaborative partnership between industry professionals and academics in order to critically evaluate and enhance the curriculum for pattern making courses. The partnership should aim to guarantee that the curriculum encompasses a wide array of pattern making procedures, encompassing both fundamental and intricate issues that students may potentially face.Item Using machine learning techniques for early identification of at-risk students in a course at the intermediary levels of education(2023-05) Anane GabrielThis thesis focuses on the use of machine learning techniques to identify at-risk students at intermediary levels of education. The goal of this project is to develop a predictive model that can identify students who may be struggling in the course before they reach a critical point that leads to lower grades or withdrawal. Based on the analysis of related literature, this study selected students’ personal characteristics and academic performance as input attributions at the intermediary level of education. Prediction models were developed using Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Decision Tree (DT) and Linear regression. A sample of 785 students was utilized in the procedures of model training and testing. The results of each model were presented in a confusion matrix and were analyzed by calculating the rates of accuracy, precision, recall, and F-measure. The results suggested all three machine learning methods were effective for student at-risk prediction, but DT presented a better performance. By identifying at risk students early, teachers can provide additional support and resources to prevent students from falling behind and dropping out. Ultimately, this research could have significant implications for improving student retention rates in intermediary education and helping students achieve their academic goals.Item FACTORS AFFECTING THE NON-CONSUMPTION OF MADE IN GHANA PRODUCTS (A CASE STUDY OF TRADERS AT PAUL SAGOE LINE ADUM-KUMASI)(2023-09) LATIF IMAM ABUBAKARThe non-consumption of made in Ghana products has had a toll on the economy.
